Description :
Shichiri Beach in Sagami Province is one of the early works from Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, known for its tranquil composition and refined color palette. The depicted location, Shichirigahama, is a long coastal stretch along Sagami Bay in today’s Kanagawa Prefecture.
Unlike many of Hokusai’s prints that include figures in motion, this piece is completely devoid of human presence. The focus is entirely on the gentle harmony of hills, trees, waves, clouds, and the distant Mount Fuji.
Rather than using linear perspective, depth is suggested through overlapping forms, tonal gradation, and spatial balance. The rippling waves in the foreground and the seamless transitions between sky and sea showcase Hokusai’s mastery of visual rhythm and compositional restraint.
This is one of the early prints from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," characterized by its use of indigo blue ink and minimalist composition. Unlike many of Hokusai's prints, this artwork focuses solely on the scenic beauty of the landscape, devoid of any human figures.
Hokusai Katsushika :
Known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese Ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker.
He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty six views of Mt Fuji, which includes the iconic print The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing Ukiyo-e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals. His works are thought to have had a significant influence on Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monete during the wave of Japonism that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.
REPRODUCTION : In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints, providing them to Japanese collectors and Westerners seeking rare designs.
New blocks were made, and artisan printers painstakingly printed each color using the same method as the 19th-century originals.
