A set of seven Japanese lacquerware sakazuki (sake cups), each decorated with a hand-painted bijin-ga, a classical image of a woman inspired by the Edo-period ukiyo-e tradition.
Each cup features a warm gold-toned lacquer interior with a delicately painted figure of a woman in kimono with elaborate hair ornaments. The designs are rendered in black, red, and muted earth tones.
Because the decoration ishand-painted, subtle variations appear between the figures in the eyes, hands, and line work, giving each cup its own character.
The exterior is finished in red lacquer with a gold rim, while the base remains undecorated.
The set is presented in its original black presentation box with copper clasp hardware. The box shows light fading and age-related wear, while the clasp remains secure.
A beautiful example of mid-century Japanese lacquerware combining traditional imagery with functional tableware.
