This art work depicts the actors from the play 'Keisei Sanbon-gasa' performed at the Miyakoza Theater in July of the sixth year of Kansei.
The first thing to notice about this illustration is its vibrant color scheme, which, compared to other works by Sharaku, is the most extravagant due to its contrast against the white mica background. The elaborate patterns on Nagoya Sanzan's kimono and the bright pink garment of Keisei Katsuragi contribute to this flamboyance. However, the black pattern on Katsuragi's garment is strategically positioned at the center, effectively balancing and stabilizing the composition.
The second notable aspect is the structural beauty of the composition. In addition to the bold triangular composition from the upper left corner, the picture is formed by the accumulation of several triangular shapes. Furthermore, the division of the right side of the triangle into five sections prevents monotony while maintaining harmony. The triangular-based composition is a hallmark of Sharaku's style, evident in other works but most prominently displayed in this piece. Through meticulous attention to color coordination and structural beauty (or spatial utilization), this illustration exudes vitality and coherence.
