"Sunchū Ōno Shinden"

Katsushika Hokusai’s “Ōno Shinden in Suruga Province” portrays Mount Fuji from the reclaimed wetlands of Ōno Shinden, situated between Hara-juku and Yoshiwara-juku along the Tōkaidō Road. Created around 1830–32 as part of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this woodblock print captures a tranquil rural scene at dusk. Farmers lead oxen carrying bundles of reeds, their silhouettes mirrored against the marshland known as Fuji Numa. Every figure—human, animal, and bird—moves westward, forming a rare visual unity that distinguishes this composition from Hokusai’s other Tōkaidō scenes.

The work’s geometry is subtle yet deliberate: the triangular reeds atop the oxen echo Fuji’s shape in the distance, while the horizontal movement of figures contrasts with the vertical stillness of the mountain. A flock of white egrets links the foreground to the sky, guiding the viewer’s eye through layered space. The fading sunlight, reflected in the water and on the clouds, imbues the entire landscape with a sense of completion and quiet order.

Through this balance of stillness and motion, Hokusai presents a meditation on time itself. The day ends, labor ceases, and all beings return home under the same sky. What might otherwise be a humble agricultural moment becomes a profound reflection on human rhythm and natural harmony. The piece stands as one of the most lyrical expressions within the Thirty-six Views—a visual poem of peace, return, and the silent grace of everyday life.

Hokusai Katsushika :

Known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese Ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker.
He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty six views of Mt Fuji, which includes the iconic print The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing Ukiyo-e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals. His works are thought to have had a significant influence on Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monete during the wave of Japonism that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.

REPRODUCTION : In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints, providing them to Japanese collectors and Westerners seeking rare designs.
New blocks were made, and artisan printers painstakingly printed each color using the same method as the 19th-century originals.
